You mean the strum bar, right? In order to test this, strum up and down in any menu in the game. If your selection moves up and down then it's working, if it doesn't move at all, then you have a broken guitar. You'll need to contact EA for an RMA. Information on that was included in the packaging of your game.

That is just so fucked ! I really would advice you to go back to the shop probably its packaged wrong.... Tell your son that the packagers are jerks :) ! I had a ps3 guitar and it worked , at the shop they will give it back directly.
