Unfortunately its a trip to the repair shop. This model is no longer available so it might make that much harder to get parts. Most reputable shops will look at it for a low labor charge and tell you your options. If they fix it they will subtract the labor for looking at it. Consider if it costs less than 50% of the cost to buy a new one it's worth it. Over that buy a new one. Also consider how old your TV is and much longer will it last. Best advice I can give you.

Picture went out on p50hdm Vizio Plazma tv after loud POP

It's either the backlight lamp or backlight inverter is busted due to a power failure or fluctuation. Here's how to determine which is which:
  1. Grab a flashlight.
  2. Turn on the TV.
  3. Shine the flashlight onto the screen.
  4. If you cannot see any display even a faint one, the backlight inverter is dead, else the backlight lamps are busted.
  5. Replace which ever is the culprit.

I have a Vizio P50 HDM and while watching it last evening I heard a loud pop and the picture went into a very noisy/distorted condition. Sound is OK. Any ideas?

That loud pop is your Y and Z sustainer. Normally it goes out completly but yours is still half working. Not usally fixable yourself, because you may need to flash the control board f/w , which is proprietary and can't be aquired unless you work for them,

Made popping sound then picture went black

I have the Vizio JV50P (Plasma) after 2 months it's started to make a loud pop sound then no picture. Vizio sent a third part repair man to replace the power board, main board, left and right sustainer boards and no less then 24 hours later... I had the same issue. I was just on the phone this evening with "Vizio level 3 support" and they out right lied to me. They told me they never heard of this issue before and yet it all over the internet. Shame on me for not searching the internet more thoroughly for known issues with Vizio products. If I had I would have easily found the term that seems to have associated itself with the Vizio’s line of flat panel TV’s ‘The Pop Of Death”

I am current climbing the Vizio Org Chart to get my money back. I have spoken from level 1 thru level 3 tech support. Who were willing to replace the defective unit with a refurbished unit!!! NO WAY! Then I spoke with a customer service rep and then his supervisor. “No Help!!!” They read from a script and showed no compassion for my issue. They too wanted to send me a refurbished set that is only covered by the balance of my warranty! A set that has the same issue that they can not even prevent from occurring and sets made as recent as 9/07 (manufactures date), new sets! I just left a voice mail message with the Customer Service Manager of Vizio corporate (aka V, inc.) and will await his call back tomorrow. I then searched the internet and found the term that seems to be growing in association to Vizio… ‘The Pop Of Death’ I can not wait to hit him with that term tomorrow! If I do not hear back from him, I will contact his superior. It’s very easy to find that information on the BBB. As far as I am concern Vizio is not only a poor product but a deceptive company who so far does not stand by their product. I will follow up this post in a week or so.
