When I slide the release button, it moves only a fraction of an inch. I don't want to press too hard in case I crack the plastic. I've watched the video so I am clear on how it should work. Also, I have emptied the canister successfully in the past.

Try to move forth and back the canister when you press the button, it is surelly stuck.

Actually my husband figured out that the button would release when the filter assembly is attached. Oddly, the video we watched told us to detach the filter assembly. Anyway, problem solved!
