Stand vacuum up and with it plugged in. Rotate knob between carpet and bare floor and back 5 times leaving it on carpet when finished. Rotate vacuum back from upright position and lay vacuum on the floor, rotating it onto its side. Turn vacuum on.

SOURCE: Dyson vacuum cleaner-brush bar is frozen

Hi If your Dyson has a brush protection design - i.e. roller bar on the top of the hood on the left hand side then the DYson can't be repaired by you- serviceman or professional care can replace it.
However if the Dyson doesn't have the roller bar on top of the hood, flip the machine over so that the beater brush is facing upwards, locate three/four screw heads that can be undone with a coin and remove the sole plate assembly. This should give you a clean view of the brush bar, drive belt and dirt channel. Ensure everything is clean espcially if the brush bar has lots of hair or threads tightly corded around. Then locate the drive belt and check to see if it has snapped. Grasp the beater bar gently upwards and the belt and brush can then be removed. Fit a new belt on carefully and check the tension as it will be tight.

SOURCE: My Dyson Animal 14 beater brush will not turn.

It MAY be a clutch issue. I had a similar problem with my DC07 Animal recently a posted a solution elsewhere on this site, but here's the summary. To reset the clutch on my model, recline the vacuum, turn it on it's side and slowly change the carpet/bare floor knob from one setting to the other about 6 times. This apparently reset the clutch and now it works fine. You may also wish to call DYSON. They're very helpful and walk you through troubleshooting before recommending servicing. Their number is 1-866-693-9766. They'll need your model and serial number (located on bottom of uinit).

SOURCE: Dyson DC14 Brush Bar won't turn

You don't need to take it for repairs, I just corrected the same problem on the phone with a tech. Have the head on your lap, make sure the end nearest the little belt has the rounded side of the bar facing you. The squared off end faces towards the machine. Place your left hand pointy finger under the bar (the 2 inch bar next to the little belt) and lift up, while finessing the loose end of the bar into place, with the rounded part still facing you. Then it sort of snaps into place. Now, replace the face plate. In the upright mode, starting at the carpet dial, switch the dial back and forth between carpet and bare floor, ten times. (the tech actually referred to this as re-setting the vac. LOL) Plug the vac in, incline the hand, and start. It should work. It didn't for me the first time and made a horrible sound. That meant I had to go and repeat the process again, but lo and behold, IT WORKED! When in doubt, call the tech and don't let them get away from you; have them stay on the line until the problem is resolved.

How to change belt in dyson upright model dc07

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

There are two versions of DC07 - some include a brush bar which rotates all the time when the vacuum is running. And some include a brush control clutch mechanism which allows you to turn off the brush bar for hard floor cleaning. If your machine has the brush control, you'll see the dial on the front of the cleaner head.

If you have a DC07 without the brush control feature, you can replace the belt as shown in our online Support guide: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc07/dc07-standard/maintaining-your-dyson-machine/change-the-belt1/belt-fitting-preparation

However, if you have a DC07 with the brush control feature, the clutch mechanism uses belts engineered to last the lifetime of the machine in normal use. These are not designed to be replaced by the user, and we would advise against attempting to change these as damage may be caused to your machine.

For further advice on having your machine repaired, or to order replacement belts for a DC07 without brush control, please contact our experts directly. You can reach us by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Brush bar won't spin. Both filters have been cleaned ,all hoses checked for blockages, brush bar removed for cleaning

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC25 doesn't use a conventional, user-replaceable belt. Instead it it uses a belt engineered to last the lifetime of the vacuum in normal use, protected by a sensor which shuts off the brush bar if something jams it.

Normally, checking the cleaner head for obstructions and removing any threads or hair from the brush bar and endcap will allow you to reset your machine:

However if you've already followed each of the steps shown in our video guide without success, you may need a replacement cleaner head or a repair of your machine. If you can contact us directly we should be able to arrange this for you, and can also confirm if this is covered under your Dyson warranty.

When you have your DC25 easily to hand, please get in touch with the Dyson Customer Helpline so we can help determine if a repair or replacement part is needed. You can reach us by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

We'll look forward to speaking with you.

My dyson C07 ANIMAL is making a loud clatter noise when I push the head down. I have removed the sole plate and the brush bar is cracked so I removed it, but I understand the clutch maybe a problem also...

The noise is likely the clutch if you have a cracked brush bar. If so replace the brush bar, also replace the belts in the clutch or the clutch if the belts are stretched out.

The bar brush does not spin. I opened the vacuum head and the drive belt to the bar brush is loose. I don't see how you remove the slack from the belt.

you have to have it in the carpet setting in order to put pressure on the v-belt. there is no way to tighten up the v-belt, but i would try to replace the big flat belt. if you haven't changed this belt in over 6 months, i would change it. ( on average belts need to be changed every 6-8 months). the reason is that the belt streches over time and doesn't have enough tention to ingage the v-belt in order for the brush to work. hope this helps

I have a dyson upright and he beater brush is not turning

There are four possible reasons for the problem. We will take them from the easiest to fix to the hardest.

1. The manual clutch is not engaged. On the bottom right side of the vaccum is the manual clutch knob. Be sure it is rotated all the way forward. The clutch should now engage when the handle is lowered from the upright position to the vacuumig position.

2. The brush bar is entangled with debris keeping it from turning. Turn the vacuum over, remove the brush bar cover by using a coin to turn the screw like pinions a quarter turn counter-clockwise. Remove any hair, carpet fibers or other items wrapped around the brush bar. Disengage the manual clutch by turning it toward the back of the vacuum. Try turning the brush bar by hand to see that it moves freely.

3. The brush bar is broken. While you have the brush bar cover removed, inspect the brush bar for any cracks or other signs of damage. The frequency of a damaged or defective brush bar is higher than most people may think. If damaged, the brush bar will need to be replaced.

4. The clutch assebly is not functioning properly. In that case, it would be best to have a service tech handle the matter. If you want to inspect the clutch or even consider replacing it yourself, this link may be of interest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_CtaFcc5HU

Hope I've been of some help.

Revolving brush stopped after I got a sock snagged in it.

If the Dyson model has a brush bar control roller at the left hand side of the top hood then it won't be able to be repaired unless its by a Dyson call out or someone who repairs Dyson models with brush control protection.
If the model doesn't have a brush control dial then you will have to change the drive belt:
Easy to do if you flip the machine over with the beater bar looking upwards. Locate the three/two screw heads and undo with a coin. When the roller section is revealed by taking off the floor head you should replace the belt with a new one and be careful putting the beater bar in the right way on both ends. The belt will be tight brand new so expect some tension in it.
If this works for you please rate Fixya! Thanks.

Changing belt on Kirby Classic 1972

When you turned the knob, did it turn easily or hard. If it was easy, then the knob part inside did not catch the belt. If it did turn hard, when you had the brush roll off, did you check the ends to see if they turned easily or not. if not, then replace the brush roll.

Replacing Belt

On the front of the power head is a knob with the KIRBY name on it. Rotate this knob in a counter clockwise direction and it will "lift" the belt off the motor spindle. Release the head lever, only one direction it will turn and remove the head. Turn the head over on its back, turn the KIRBY knob to release the old belt. Remove the brush guard by turning the two release fixtures. Remove the guard. Pry the brush out of the head. Remove the old belt. While the brush is out remove any build up of hair and lint off the ends that's where the bearings are. put a few drops of 3 in One oil on the ends. Put the new belt over the brush and re-install the brush into the head. the brush will go in only one way. With your finger pull the belt into the housing and rotate the KIRBY knob until the pawl inside grabs the belt. Re-install the brush guard by engaging the two metal pieces into the front of the head and pull down backwards over the head and rotate the holding clips back horizontal. re-install the powerhead on the machine, lock it in place and rotate the KIRBY knob clockwise. You should be all set!
