Hi,

Pls reconnect the Ethernet cable back to the other PC and check how is its getting IP address, automatic (Obtain an IP...) or fix (Use the following...). To do this go to your Control Panel, click on Network Connections, right click on Local Area Connection, click on Properties, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on Properties button. If it is the latter, note down the numbers.

Plug the Ethernet back to your laptop and do the same. Set your laptop's Internet Protocol Properties to mimic the other computer settings. The only possible difference would be is if the other computer is ticked on "Use the....", the IP address of the laptop should be different from the other PC. Example if the other PC is 192.168.1.5, make the laptop 192.168.1.6. All others stay the same.

Hope this ne of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

IP connects... No internet.. Media Disconnected

My adapter shows "media disconnected" as well. That's not an issue.

Try running ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew.

Ethernet connectivity problem.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click Configure.
  4. In the resulting dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
  5. In the Property list, click Media Type or Link Speed & Duplex or something similar.

Note If these properties do not appear, look for a property that has the values Duplex and Half-Duplex.
  6. Click a specific bandwidth in the Value list, and then click OK.
  7. Close the Network Connections dialog box.
  8. Test the network connection.
  9. If these steps do not resolve the issue, repeat steps 1 through 5, and then click a different value in step 6 until you have tested all values.
Check if that works.

Media disconnected

If you are using one box (or modem/router) only, when your computer says media disconnected, it means that your computer does not detect your modem.
You can try unplugging and replugging the ethernet at the back of your computer or laptop. make sure that the light on the ethernet port is lit up (especially for desktops, not sure about laptops though).
You can also do the same process with the ethernet cable from your modem/router. if your modem/router has other ethernet ports in it, try to connect it to other ports as well. If your computer still says media disconnected, try purchasing or borrowing a new ethernet cable.
Also make sure that your ethernet adapter is working properly and that media disconnected follows after ethernet adapter local area connection and not wireless connection.
Hope this helps!

Ethernet port not reading my modem for my dell inspiron 8600

make sure that your tcp/ip networking is set to 'Obtain IP address automatically'.
Power modem first , then laptop. Make sure that you are using the right cable for connection between modem and comp.

Thanks but I need help just getting online

It could be a difference configuration of the ethernet adapters on each machine.

Try this from each machine when connected to the cable.
(assumes Windows XP)

Click Start then All Programs then Accessories then Command Prompt A new window will open -- in that window type the following

ipconfig /all

If this works copy the following for each adapter (there may be more than one per machine)

Adapter
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
DNS Address(es) may be more than one

Put the answers in a comment to this problem and I will attempt to provide additional steps to resolve the issue.

one possibility --
If you loaded your DNS addresses into the laptop's adapter configuration and not into the desktop's laptop configuration that could be the issue.

There could be other issues the ipconfig answers should narrow down the problem so a specific solution can be given.
