To troubleshoot a connectivity issue please try the following:
Ensure the cable is secure on the device and computer. Disconnect and reconnect the device.
If still not connecting and the cable is secure press the rest on the back of the device while connected to the computer.
If a reset does not work then disconnect the device from the computer, wait at least 10 seconds and try another USB port on the computer.
If another USB port does not resolve the issue disconnect the device, restart your computer, then connect the device.
If all the above fails you can Reinstall the Device Driver. Navigate to the Device Manager on your computer. Please note this will vary based on the operating system you are using. Once at the Device Manager screen locate Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Click the arrow/triangle to the left of the Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the drop down list. If the device driver is the issue one of the items listed will say Unknown Device. Right click on Unknown Device and select uninstall. Once the uninstall has been completed, restart your computer with the device still connected.
If the device is not recognized after trying all these steps you will need to contact Technical Support for additional troubleshooting.

i would go to your device manager
then go to the top of that box and hover over the icons on the top right
one of those icons will say scan for new hardware
so hit the scan icon
windows may or maynot reconize the external hard drive
then leaving the external drive plugged into the usb
restart the laptop and maybe windows will then reconize it
if not please come back to us again stating what operating system you have
Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.
Down load the firmware on Sansa's website. I have a Sansa 250R and it wouldn't work with the new replacement usb (Griffin) cord I bought at Best Buy. So I bought a Sansa Fuze and the cord that came with it worked on the E250R. Huh? Yeah, go figure...and oh, that replacement Griffin usb cord I bought worked fine with the new Fuze. I came real close to buying a new battery for the E250R but instead invested that money in the Fuze.
Try getting the official Apple firmware from iTunes(just the download from their website) and save it. Then go to the iPod and hold down the enter button and the play button until it restarts.
