Is this something you've had for a while or just purchased?
What are you doing to try and remove the Cyclone & Canister from the Vacuum?
It sounds like the Cyclone release catch has either snapped or the return spring is jamming it. Does the catch move at all when you push it? Either way the only way you're going to be able to remove the cyclone is to remove the top cover/handle which is secured in place by 3 screws as shown in the exploded diagram at the following link. - http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdir... - Once you've got it off you can then assess the damaged. It coud just be a case of relocating the spring or you may need to purchase a new Cyclone. If you need any further assistance then just ask.
Do you mean the canister itself has broken or just the base flap? Is their any damage to the cyclone release catch now you've got it off the unit?

I've had it for four years. Just all of a sudden won't release when I press the purple button that usually releases it from the main part of the vacuum.
I removed the three screws only to have difficulty pulling the canister off the vacuum base. The base of canister broke.
